Top 20 IT Job Interview Best Practices

 

  1. Prepare yourself ahead of time by researching the company, knowing who you will be meeting with, and reviewing your resume.

  2. Be prepared for the interview format. If your interview is in-person, know the location and parking situation ahead of time. If it is online, check your internet connectivity and technology.

  3. Dress professionally. 

  4. Bring a minimum of 3 copies of your resume for in-person interviews.

  5. Prepare your references, and have a copy ready to provide.

  6. Have a list of questions prepared to ask during your IT job interview. Includes questions about the position, company values and culture, and the interview(s). 

  7. Bring a notebook and pen to takes notes. Write down your questions, impressions of the company and position, and notes about your own performance, these can be used for follow-up or future interviews, as well as to personalize thank you letters.

  8. Greet everyone with eye contact, a smile, and hello.

  9. Be enthusiastic and energetic, yet relaxed and alert. 

  10. Sit up straight, smile, and be professional.

  11. Show that you desire the position and are passionate about working for the company. 

  12. Provide specific examples of previous work or projects that relate to the questions that you are asked.

  13. Describe your skills and how they will enable you to complete the responsibilities that will be required of you if hired.

  14. Communicate your level of interest and availability.

  15. Express why you are the top candidate for the position. Communicate that you work well with others.

  16. Be yourself!

  17. Be sure to fill out all applications and forms neatly, thoughtfully, and completely. 

  18. Hold all questions about salary, bonuses, commission, vacation time, or anything else related to what the company can do for you until AFTER you receive a job offer.

  20. Send a thank you note within 24 hours, whether by email, mail, or in person.
